Google Photos Won't Free Up Space

It feels like Google Photos has existed a whole lot longer than the v years it's been around. By 2019 the service had attracted over ane billion users, pregnant that Google'south contempo decision to stop providing free unlimited storage is a huge accident to, well, more than a billion people.

As of 1 June 2021 whatever photos or videos you upload, or which are uploaded automatically by the app, will count against your 15GB of Google storage, or yet much storage y'all have with your Google account.

Only Google'due south own phones – the Pixel two through to 5 – will exist exempt from the new rules. If you ain one, here's what happens now:

  • Pixel 3a, 4, 4a, five: You'll notwithstanding accept unlimited 'Storage saver' uploads, simply not Original quality.
  • Pixel iii: Unlimited free Original quality photos until 1 Jan 2022. After that, unlimited Storage saver uploads.
  • Pixel 2: Unlimited Storage saver uploads.
  • Original Pixel (2016): Unlimited Original quality uploads until your phone stops working.

For everyone else, you get to continue your uploaded photos and videos, but anything uploaded on or after 1 June will count against your Google storage.

Google Photos won't delete your photos

Technically, you lot don't need to do annihilation differently now because photos and videos you have on your phone will still exist uploaded to Google Photos as normal, even later on i June. Only uploads (backups) will cease when your Google storage is total.

This means those images and videos volition stay on your phone and won't exist backed up in the cloud. That may exist ok with you, and it doesn't hateful you can't view those photos in the Google Photos app on your phone and do good from all the great features such as automated tagging, the subject-based search (such as "cats" or "cars") and the automatic creations such as animations and videos.

Aside from the fact you no longer accept an online fill-in of your photos and videos, you won't be able to access them in Google Photos from whatsoever other device.

I honey being able to quickly find a photograph in web browser version of Google Photos, but once your storage is full, the web version won't update with new photos and videos.

What'due south Storage saver?

Google has changed the proper name of 'High quality' uploads to 'Storage saver'.

This is a tacit admission that this option, which compresses photos and videos and doesn't store the original-quality files (except for photos 16Mp or nether), isn't really high quality at all. So you may want to rethink your options and beginning uploading at Original quality.
